Our PV Solar Project

DSC00952

For many years now, I've thought about installing a PV solar system on our house to reduce and/or eleminate our electric bill. We're not the most electrically frugal people around, and with SDG&E's tier system, our bill gets pretty big.

But I'm a complete info-geek, and for a long time it was hard to manage the data that your system was producing unless you were to implement a daily log of activity (something I might be able to stick with for a few weeks at best). But with the age of the internet, comes wireless data streamed directly from the inverters and automatic logging and charts showing system history, current activity, etc. Also, I am looking into getting an all electric car from Aptera. The idea of not having to stop at a gas station is appealing!! Check out the company and their car, it's AMAZING!

And so we've finally done it. Our system went on-line on Wednesday, January 14, 2009. It's clean, totally silent, and churns away generating power whenever the sun is up.

Here is our setup, plan, and a few pics.

Enjoy!

February 2, 2010

Our "true-up" bill arrived today with data from the past year. Our TOTAL bill for the year was $149.52. That's a average of $.41/day. Our daily average before adding the solar was $6.58/day. Keep in mind, the minimum charge to even stay connected to the grid is $62.05/yr, so we pay that minimum charge no matter what. More date to come!

Here is a link to the LIVE DATA of what our system is producing. It's a cool link provided by SunPower.
